Help for you, your child, and your family.

Sometimes life feels unmanageable and the direction forward seems unclear.  If you have ADHD, autism, or other neurodevelopmental differences (or suspect you might), it adds another level of complexity.  You may feel like you have tried everything, but still come up short.  Self-esteem and overall mental health can be significantly impacted.

When children are not consistently experiencing success at school or at home, there are usually multiple issues that must be addressed.  If a child is not meeting expectations at school, whether the concerns are academic or behavioral, schools are required to carry out formal interventions (and subsequent evaluation, if warranted)  so the child can make adequate educational progress.  These supports and services primarily target the "what" and "how" of learning, but not the "why".

I can help address the "why".  This is often the missing piece that is needed to produce consistent and long-term benefits for your child.  Through a consultative partnership, we will identify ways to improve your child's skills, confidence and happiness.  This therapeutic process may include treatment sessions with your child to teach and practice skills or to process big feelings or challenging experiences.  Working with parents to better understand and support their child is usually a crucial part of treatment, as well.  Information from your child's school may be gathered to provide a broader understanding of needs.  Formal diagnosis of disorders related to attention or anxiety may be appropriate if this is necessary to access needed services.

I am here to provide information, support, and encouragement when situations feel overwhelming (for parents or children).  As a former special education teacher and school psychologist, I am well versed in current school culture, services, curriculum, and policy, as well as legal guidelines and requirements.  If the flow of communication between home and school has been disrupted, we will work together to re-establish positive communication.  Although my primary role is to work directly with children and parents, in some cases it may be useful for me to work directly with your child's school to help address areas of need.  My approach is strength-based to help individuals embrace their uniqueness, recognize where they need to grow, and help them to "find their fit" in life.

In my practice:

  • Treatment plans incorporate methods from:

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

    • Problem-Solving and Strengths-Based approaches

    • The Collaborative and Proactive Solutions model

  • Educational Therapy uses:

    • Evidence-based and multisensory strategies

    • Structured Literacy methodology for reading and writing (recognized by the International Dyslexia Association)

  • Strategies or materials are available to share with your child's school or other professionals

  • Supplemental resources and materials will be provided, if desired, for parents interested in further independent study
